"When the foundation of the
Mashriqu'l-Adhkar is laid in America," 'Abdu'l-Bahá Himself has predicted,
"and that Divine Edifice is completed, a most wonderful and thrilling
motion will appear in the world of existence... From that point of light the
spirit of teaching, spreading the Cause of God and promoting the teachings of
God, will permeate to all parts of the world." "Out of this
Mashriqu'l-Adhkar," He has affirmed in the Tablets of the Divine Plan,
"without doubt, thousands of Mashriqu'l-Adhkars will be born."
"It marks," He, furthermore, has written,
"the inception of the Kingdom of God on earth."

Striving for Excellence
Make ye then a mighty effort, that the purity and sanctity
which, above all else, are cherished by 'Abdu'l-Bahá, shall distinguish the
people of Bahá; that in every kind of excellence the people of God shall
surpass all other human beings; that both outwardly and inwardly they shall
prove superior to the rest; that for purity, immaculacy, refinement, and the
preservation of health, they shall be leaders in the vanguard of those who
know. And that by their freedom from enslavement, their knowledge, their
self-control, they shall be first among the pure, the free and the wise.

Cooperation & Mutual Support
Human
brotherhood and dependence exist because mutual helpfulness and cooperation are
the two necessary principles underlying human welfare. This is the physical
relationship of mankind. There is another brotherhood—the spiritual—which is
higher, holier and superior to all others. It is heavenly; it emanates from the
breaths of the Holy Spirit and the effulgence of merciful attributes; it is
founded upon spiritual susceptibilities. This brotherhood is established by the
Manifestations of the Holy One.

Word of God
The believers ought to give the Message even to those who do
not seem to be ready for it, because they can never judge the real extent to
which the Word of God can influence the hearts and minds of the people, even
those who appear to lack any power of receptivity to the Teachings.

Baha’i Funds & Contributions
...It is for the National Assembly to exercise its judgement as to what extent
the resources at their disposal enable them to aid financially the individual
undertakings of the friends. Should the response of the friends and Assemblies
to the appeals made on behalf of the National Fund be prompt, sustained, and
generous, the National Assembly will, I am certain, justify its sympathy,
goodwill and genuine co-operation with every individual Bahá'í enterprise. I
would, however, at this early stage of our work, strongly urge, nay entreat,
the friends not to dissipate their efforts, but to seek, after frank, mature,
and continuous deliberation, to arrive at a common conclusion as to the most
urgent requirements and needs of the hour, and having unified their views to
strive to uphold and enforce them with promptitude, whole-heartedness, and
understanding.

Baha’i elections
In the Persian Bayan, the Báb stated: "Well is it with
him who fixeth his gaze upon the Order of Bahá'u'lláh, and rendereth thanks
unto his Lord. For He will assuredly be made manifest. God hath indeed
irrevocably ordained it in the Bayan." Shoghi Effendi identifies this
"Order" with the System Bahá'u'lláh envisages in the Aqdas, in
which He testifies to its revolutionizing effect on the life of humanity and
reveals the laws and principles which govern its operation. The features of the
"new World Order" are delineated in the Writings of Bahá'u'lláh and
'Abdu'l-Bahá and in the letters of Shoghi Effendi and the Universal House of
Justice.

Health & Healing
O thou seeker after the
Kingdom! Every divine Manifestation is the very life of the world, and the
skilled physician of each ailing soul. The world of man is sick, and that
competent Physician knoweth the cure, arising as He doth with teachings,
counsels and admonishments that are the remedy for every pain, the healing balm
to every wound. It is certain that the wise physician can diagnose his
patient’s needs at any season, and apply the cure. Wherefore, relate thou the
Teachings of the Abhá Beauty to the urgent needs of this present day, and thou
wilt see that they provide an instant remedy for the ailing body of the world.
Indeed, they are the elixir that bringeth eternal health.

Patience
We can never exert the
influence over others which we can exert over ourselves. If we are better, if
we show love, patience, and understanding of the weaknesses of others; if we
seek to never criticize but rather encourage, others will do likewise, and we can
really help the Cause through our example and spiritual strength.

Reflection Meetings
A natural vehicle
for multiplying core activities has been reflection meetings. These meetings at
the cluster level have been particularly effective in well-established areas where
an expanding pool of human resources exists. In such gatherings the institutions
and the believers, many of whom are involved in the institute process, study the
relevant Five Year Plan documents, share experiences, and consult on the achievements
and strengths within the cluster. Avoiding "grandiose and elaborate plans,”
the friends reach a consensus on short-term goals which reflect the pledges of individual
initiatives and collective actions that have emerged from the consultation. These
goals are generally incorporated into a calendar of activities that becomes the
framework for the subsequent two- to three-month period. In many clusters around
the world, how to hold productive and enjoyable reflection meetings has become
an important area for learning.

Divine Assistance
If in this
day a soul shall act according to the precepts and the counsels of God, he will
serve as a divine physician to mankind, and like the trump of
Israfil, [1] he will call the dead of this contingent world to life;
for the confirmations of the Abha Realm are never interrupted, and such a
virtuous soul hath, to befriend him, the unfailing help of the Company on high.
Thus shall a sorry gnat become an eagle in the fullness of his strength, and a
feeble sparrow change to a royal falcon in the heights of ancient glory.

Social and Economic Development
A superficial culture, unsupported by a cultivated morality,
is as "a confused medley of dreams," and external lustre without
inner perfection is "like a vapour in the desert which the thirsty dreameth to be water." For results which would
win the good pleasure of God and secure the peace and well-being of man, could
never be fully achieved in a merely external civilisation.

Scholarship
I most urgently request the friends of God to make every
effort, as much as lieth within their competence, along these lines. The harder
they strive to widen the scope of their knowledge, the better and more
gratifying will be the result. Let the loved ones of God, whether young or old,
whether male or female, each according to his capabilities, bestir themselves
and spare no efforts to acquire the various current branches of knowledge, both
spiritual and secular, and of the arts.

Living the Life
How often the beloved Master was heard
to say. Should each one of the friends take upon himself to carry out, in all
its integrity and implications, only one of the teachings of the Faith, with
devotion, detachment, constancy and perseverance and exemplify it in all his
deeds and pursuits of life, the world would become another world and the face
of the earth would mirror forth the splendours of the Abha Paradise. Consider
what marvellous changes would be effected if the beloved of the Merciful
conducted themselves, both in their individual and collective capacities, in
accordance with the counsels and exhortations which have streamed from the Pen
of Glory.

Summer Schools
It is not enough to bring people into the Faith, one must
educate them and deepen their love for it and their knowledge of its teachings,
after they declare themselves. As the Bahá'ís are few in number, especially the
active teachers, and there is a great deal of work to be done, the education of
these new believers is often sadly neglected, and then results are seen such as
the resignations you have had recently. In this respect, the summer schools can
be of the greatest help to the friends, new and old Bahá'ís alike, for in them
they can study, and enjoy the feeling of Bahá'í companionship which is, alas,
usually lacking in their home communities, owing to the smallness of their
numbers.

Selflessness
Sharp must be thy sight… and adamant thy soul, and
brass-like thy feet, if thou wishest to be unshaken by the assaults of the
selfish desires that whisper in men’s breasts. This
is the firm injunction which the Pen of the Most Great Name hath, by virtue of
the Will of the Ancient King, been moved to reveal. Keep it as the apple of
thine eye, and be thou of the thankful. Strive thou day and night to serve the
Cause of Him Who is the Eternal Truth, and be thou detached from all else but
Him. By Myself! Whatever thou seest in this Day shall perish. Supremely lofty
will be thy station, if thou remainest steadfast in the Cause of thy Lord.
Towards Him are thy busy movements directed, and in Him is thy final
resting-place.

Ancestors
In
reference to your questions about ancestors and descendants, we have been
directed to say that while there are Tablets from Baha’u’llah stating that
faith in the Manifestation of God on the part of a believer attracts God's
mercy to the souls of departed parents the House of Justice knows of no text in
Baha'i Writings to support the statement that a believer's seven past
generations and seven generations to descend from him are blessed when that person becomes a Baha'i. You may also
be familiar with the statement of 'Abdu’l-Baha that “it is permitted to ask for
advancement, forgiveness, mercy, beneficence, and blessings for a man after his
death . .. . Therefore children... must implore pardon and forgiveness for
their parents.” (Some Answered Questions)."

One’s Will & Testament
In the 'Kitab-i-Aqdas'
Baha'u'llah has
stated:
"It is incumbent upon everyone to
write his testament. It behoveth him to adorn its
heading with the Most Great Name, to testify therein to the oneness of God as
manifested in the Day-Spring of His revelation and to set forth such good deeds
as he may wish to be realized, that these may stand as his testimony in the
worlds of Revelation and of Creation and be as a treasure stored up with his
Lord, the Protector, the Trusted One.”

Ego
Regarding
the questions you asked: self has really two meanings, or is used in two
senses, in the Baha'i writings; one is self, the identity of the individual created
by God. This is the self mentioned in such passages as 'he hath known God who
hath known himself etc.' The other self is the ego, the dark, animalistic heritage
each one of us has, the lower nature that can develop into a monster of
selfishness, brutality, lust and so on. It is this self we must struggle
against, or this side of our natures, in order to strengthen and free the
spirit within us and help it to attain perfection.
Self-sacrifice means to subordinate this lower nature and its desires to the more godly and noble side of ourselves. Ultimately, in its highest sense, self sacrifice means to give our will and our all to God to do with as He pleases. Then He purifies and glorifies our true self until it becomes a shining and wonderful reality.

Happiness
The third freedom is that
which is born of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Almighty. This is
the freedom of the human world, where man severs his affections from all
things. When he does so, he becomes immune to all hardship and sorrow. Wealth or
material power will not deflect him from moderation and fairness, neither will
poverty or need inhibit him from showing forth happiness and tranquillity. The
more the conscience of man develops, the more will his heart be free and his
soul attain unto happiness.

O Lord! Assist those who have renounced all else but Thee,
and grant them a mighty victory. Send down upon them, O Lord, the concourse of
the angels in heaven and earth and all that is between, to aid Thy servants, to

them, to invest them with glory, to confer upon them honour and exaltation, to
enrich them and to make them triumphant with a wondrous triumph.

A True Baha’i
Teaching is of course the head cornerstone of all Bahá'í
service, but successful teaching is dependent upon many factors, one of which
is the development of a true Bahá'í way of living and the fulfillment of
responsibilities which we have incurred.

Avoidance of Fault-Finding & Backbiting
It is Our wish and desire that every one of you may become a
source of all goodness unto men, and an example of uprightness to mankind.
Beware lest ye prefer yourselves above your neighbors. Fix your gaze upon Him Who
is the Temple of God amongst men. He, in truth, hath offered up His life as a
ransom for the redemption of the world. He, verily, is the All-Bountiful, the
Gracious, the Most High. If any differences arise amongst you, behold Me
standing before your face, and overlook the faults of one another for My name's
sake and as a token of your love for My manifest and resplendent Cause. We love
to see you at all times consorting in amity and concord within the paradise of
My good-pleasure, and to inhale from your acts the fragrance of friendliness
and unity, of loving-kindness and fellowship.

Conservation of the Earth’s Resources
Say: Nature in its essence is the embodiment of My Name, the
Maker, Creator. Its manifestations are diversified by varying causes, and in
this diversity there are signs for men of discernment. Nature is God's Will and
is its expression in and through the contingent world. It is a dispensation of
Providence ordained by the Ordainer, the All-Wise.

Criticism
At such a time when the political world is chaotic and
society seems to be on the verge of death, as a result of the activities of
societies that contain only half-truths, the friends of God should be united
and act as one single organism. The greater their unity the surer they can be
of winning the day. And this unity cannot be achieved save through obedience to
the Assemblies. It is true that these are still immature and may at times act
unwisely. But supporting them will help more their advance toward an
administration that is truly representative of the Cause, than by criticizing
them and ignoring their advice. Bahá'u'lláh has not only advocated certain
principles, but has also provided a mechanism whereby that ideal can be
established and perpetuated. Both of these phases are essential for the
realization of His goal of world unity.

Psychic Powers
What 'Abdu'l-Baha always pointed out in this matter is that
these psychic powers were not to be used in this world, and that, indeed, it
was dangerous to cultivate them here. They should be left dormant, and not
exploited, even when we do so with the sincere belief we are helping others. We
do not understand their nature and have no way of being sure of what is true
and what is false in such matters.
If children are inclined to be psychic they should not be blamed for it too harshly, they should not be encouraged to strengthen their powers in this direction.

Encouragement
O friends, show forth your fidelity! O my loved ones,
manifest your steadfastness and your constancy! O ye who invoke His Name, turn
ye and hold fast unto Him! O ye who lift up your hearts and implore His aid,
cling to Him and walk in His ways! It is incumbent upon every one of us to
encourage each other, to exert our utmost endeavour to diffuse His divine
fragrances and engage in exalting His Word. We must, at all times, be stirred
by the breeze that bloweth from the rose-garden of His loving-kindness, and be
perfumed with the fragrances of the mystic flowers of His grace.

Diet and Nutrition
Do not
neglect medical treatment when it
is necessary, but
leave it off when health has been restored. Treat disease through diet, by
preference, refraining from the use of drugs; and if you find what is required

The Purpose of Baha’i Administration
We urge you ever to bear in mind that the purpose of Baha'i
administration is primarily to lend strength and directive to the teaching work
and to promote the establishment of the Faith. It should never be regarded as
an end in itself but purely as a means to canalize and make effective a
spiritual vitality generated by the Word of God in the hearts of the believers.
