Teaching the Cause
Consort with all men, O people of Bahá, in a spirit of
friendliness and fellowship. If ye be aware of a certain truth, if ye possess a
jewel, of which others are deprived, share it with them in a language of utmost
kindliness and good-will.

“laws governing our spiritual lives”
Just as there are laws governing our physical lives,
requiring that we must supply our bodies with certain foods, maintain them
within a certain range of temperatures, and so forth, if we wish to avoid
physical disabilities, so also there are laws governing our spiritual lives.
These laws are revealed to mankind in each age by the Manifestation of God, and
obedience to them is of vital importance if each human being, and mankind in
general, is to develop properly and harmoniously. Moreover, these various
aspects are interdependent. If an individual violates the spiritual laws for
his own development he will cause injury not only to himself but to the society
in which he lives. Similarly, the condition of society has a direct effect on
the individuals who must live within it.

The reason “number nine… is considered by the Bahá'ís as sacred”
The number nine, which in itself is the number of
perfection, is considered by the Bahá'ís as sacred because it is symbolic of
the perfection of the Bahá'í Revelation, which constitutes the ninth in the
line of existing religions, the latest and fullest Revelation which mankind has
ever known. The eighth is the Religion of the Báb, and the remaining seven are:
Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the
religion of the Sabaeans. These religions are not the only true religions that
have appeared in the world, but are the only ones which are still existing.
There have always been divine prophets and messengers, to many of whom the
Qur'án refers. But the only ones existing are those mentioned above.

Chanting a prayer collectively vs congregational prayer
You have asked whether it is permissible for the friends to
chant a prayer collectively. There is a difference between chanting a prayer
collectively and congregational prayer. The latter is a formal prayer usually
led by an individual using a prescribed ritual. Congregational prayer in this
form is forbidden in the Faith except in the case of the Prayer for the Dead.
While reciting prayers in unison and spontaneously joining in the recitation of
the Words of God is not forbidden, the friends should bear in mind the advice
of the beloved Guardian on this subject when he stated that:
“although the friends are thus left free to follow their own
inclination, ... they should take the utmost care that any manner they practice
should not acquire too rigid a character, and thus develop into an institution.
This is a point which the friends should always bear in mind, lest they deviate
from the clear path indicated in the Teachings." [Synopsis and
Codification of the Kitáb-i-Aqdas]

Reward of guiding one soul
It is better to guide one soul than to possess all that is
on earth, for as long as that guided soul is under the shadow of the Tree of
Divine Unity, he and the one who hath guided him will both be recipients of
God's tender mercy, whereas possession of earthly things will cease at the time
of death. The path to guidance is one of love and compassion, not of force and
coercion. This hath been God's method in the past, and shall continue to be in
the future! He causeth him whom He pleaseth to enter the shadow of His Mercy. Verily,
He is the Supreme Protector, the All-Generous.

The “real purpose” of Summer Schools
The world is undoubtedly facing a great crisis and the
social, economic and political conditions are becoming daily more complex.
Should the friends desire to take the lead in reforming the world, they should
start by educating themselves and understand what the troubles and problems
really are which baffle the mind of man. It is in these Summer Schools that
this training should be provided for the friends.

“Blessed souls… [Who] were the cause of the illumination of the world of humanity”
Blessed souls whether Moses, Jesus, Zoroaster, Krishna,
Buddha, Confucius, or Muhammad were the cause of the illumination of the world
of humanity. How can we deny such irrefutable proof? How can we be blind to
such light?...

Wisdom of facing Akka when reciting Obligatory Prayers
He would advise you to only use the short midday Obligatory
Prayer. This has no genuflections and only requires that when saying it the
believer turn his face towards 'Akká where Bahá'u'lláh is buried. This is a
physical symbol of an inner reality, just as the plant stretches out to the
sunlight -- from which it receives life and growth -- so we turn our hearts to
the Manifestation of God, Bahá'u'lláh, when we pray; and we turn our faces,
during this short prayer, to where His dust lies on this earth as a symbol of
the inner act.

Eternal Life
What is meant by “eternal life” is receiving the grace of
the Holy Spirit, even as a flower partakes of the gifts and breezes of spring.
Observe that in the beginning this flower had a purely mineral life, yet
through the advent of springtime, the outpouring of its vernal showers, and the
heat of its shining sun, it found another life and appeared with the utmost
vitality, delicacy, and fragrance. Compared to its latter life, the former life
of the flower was even as death.

The World of the Kingdom
…the life of the Kingdom is the life of the spirit, and that
it is eternal and sanctified above time and place, even as the human spirit,
which is placeless. For were you to search throughout the human body, you would
be unable to find a specific place or location for the spirit. The spirit is
absolutely placeless and immaterial, but it has a connection with the body,
even as the sun has a connection with this mirror: The sun occupies no place
within the mirror, but it has a connection with it. In the same way, the world
of the Kingdom is sanctified above all that can be seen by the eye or perceived
by the other senses, such as hearing, smell, taste, or touch.

Fear of God
In the religion of God, there is no freedom of action
outside the law of God. Man may not transgress this law, even though no harm is
inflicted on one's neighbour. This is because the purpose of Divine law is the
education of all -- others as well as oneself -- and, in the sight of God, the
harm done to one individual or to his neighbour is the same and is
reprehensible in both cases. Hearts must possess the fear of God. Man should
endeavour to avoid that which is abhorrent unto God. Therefore, the freedom
that the laws of Europe offer to the individual does not exist in the law of
God. Freedom of thought should not transgress the bounds of courtesy, and
actions, likewise, should be governed by the fear of God and the desire to seek
His good pleasure.

Health and Healing
This question [health and healing] requireth the most
careful investigation. When highly-skilled physicians shall fully examine this
matter, thoroughly and perseveringly, it will be clearly seen that the
incursion of disease is due to a disturbance in the relative amounts of the
body’s component substances, and that treatment consisteth in adjusting these
relative amounts, and that this can be apprehended and made possible by means
of foods.

Humility
The duties of those whom the friends have freely and
conscientiously elected as their representatives are no less vital and binding
than the obligations of those who have chosen them. Their function is not to
dictate, but to consult, and consult not only among themselves, but as much as
possible with the friends whom they represent. They must regard themselves in
no other light but that of chosen instruments for a more efficient and
dignified presentation of the Cause of God. They should never be led to suppose
that they are the central ornaments of the body of the Cause, intrinsically
superior to others in capacity or merit, and sole promoters of its teachings
and principles. They should approach their task with extreme humility, and endeavour
by their open-mindedness, their high sense of justice and duty, their candour,
their modesty, their entire devotion to the welfare and interests of the
friends, the Cause, and humanity, to win not only the confidence and the
genuine support and respect of those whom they should serve, but also their
esteem and real affection.

The Soul of the Manifestation of God is “pre-existent”
The Prophets, unlike us, are pre-existent. The Soul of
Christ existed in the spiritual world before His birth in this world. We cannot
imagine what that world is like, so words are inadequate to picture His state
of being.

Spiritual healing
O thou distinguished physician! ... Praise be to God that
thou hast two powers: one to undertake physical healing and the other spiritual
healing. Matters related to man’s spirit have a great effect on his bodily
condition. For instance, thou shouldst impart gladness to thy patient, give him
comfort and joy, and bring him to ecstasy and exultation. How often hath it
occurred that this hath caused early recovery. Therefore, treat thou the sick
with both powers. Spiritual feelings have a surprising effect on healing
nervous ailments.

“purity and sanctity”
Make ye then a mighty effort, that the purity and sanctity
which, above all else, are cherished by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, shall distinguish the
people of Bahá; that in every kind of excellence the people of God shall
surpass all other human beings; that both outwardly and inwardly they shall
prove superior to the rest; that for purity, immaculacy, refinement, and the preservation
of health, they shall be leaders in the vanguard of those who know. And that by
their freedom from enslavement, their knowledge, their self-control, they shall
be first among the pure, the free and the wise.

The two wings of the humanity
The world of humanity is possessed of two wings: the male
and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the
bird will not fly. Until womankind reaches the same degree as man, until she
enjoys the same arena of activity, extraordinary attainment for humanity will
not be realized; humanity cannot wing its way to heights of real attainment.
When the two wings or parts become equivalent in strength, enjoying the same
prerogatives, the flight of man will be exceedingly lofty and extraordinary.
Therefore, woman must receive the same education as man and all inequality be
adjusted. Thus, imbued with the same virtues as man, rising through all the
degrees of human attainment, women will become the peers of men, and until this
equality is established, true progress and attainment for the human race will
not be facilitated.

Baha’u’llah’s “sole purpose”
By the righteousness of God, my Well-Beloved! I have never
aspired after worldly leadership. My sole purpose hath been to hand down unto
men that which I was bidden to deliver by God, the Gracious, the Incomparable,
that it may detach them from all that pertaineth to this world, and cause them
to attain such heights as neither the ungodly can conceive, nor the froward
imagine.

Spiritual qualities to strive for while serving the Cause
It behoves us, now that the signs of that glorious and
promised Day are fast appearing, to arise, with utter selflessness, unity and
determination, to promote and consolidate the Work which He has Himself
established in the heart of that vast Dominion, and prove ourselves, by our
wisdom, moderation, and constancy, worthy of the many bestowals He has showered
upon us in the past. If we but follow in His Way, regard at all times the
dignity of the Cause, guard sedulously its unity and vital principles, and
exercise the utmost endeavour to keep its Spirit pure, effective, and
unobscured, then, and only then, can we hope to achieve the immediate spread
and triumph of the Cause.

carrying out of our common task for the peace and regeneration of the world.

Pilgrim notes
Concerning the accounts of visits to Haifa, published by the
friends during the Master’s life-time, Shoghi Effendi is very reluctant to
attribute to them much authority. Most of these are personal impressions and
are to be valued only as such. Bahá’u’lláh definitely states that only His
actual writings are to be relied upon. Such reports may be interesting but not
authoritative, no matter who the reporter may be...

Not to “become captive to prescribed forms”
We should, however, be careful, as you mention in your
letter, not to make this system develop into a hard and fast creed or form. The
Cause is pure and free from such things and it ought to be the task of the
friends to keep it broad and progressive. Man is always apt to fall into the
habit of doing a thing in a certain way, and thereby become captive to
prescribed forms. It should therefore be the duty of the assemblies everywhere
to see that, though certain temporary measures are taken to further the Cause,
they do not crystallise into hard and fast creeds.

Becoming “entirely selfless and devoted to God”
We must become entirely selfless and devoted to God so that
every day and every moment we seek to do only what God would have us do and in
the way He would have us do it. If we do this sincerely then we shall have
perfect unity and harmony with each other. Where there is want of harmony,
there is lack of the true Bahá'í Spirit.

The great thing is to "live the life"--to have our
lives so saturated with the Divine teachings and the Bahá'í Spirit that people

in our character and work that will distinguish us from worldly-minded people
and make people wonder what is the secret of this new life in us.

Acceptance of our deeds by God
Thy purpose in performing thy deeds is that God may
graciously accept them; and divine acceptance can in no wise be achieved except
through the acceptance of Him Who is the Exponent of His Revelation. For
instance, if the Apostle of God -- may divine blessings rest upon Him --
accepted a certain deed, in truth God accepted it; otherwise it hath remained
within the selfish desires of the person who wrought it, and did not reach the
presence of God. Likewise, any act which is accepted by the Point of the Bayan
is accepted by God, inasmuch as the contingent world hath no other access unto
the presence of the Ancient of Days. Whatever is sent down cometh through the
Exponent of His Revelation, and whatever ascendeth, ascendeth unto the Exponent
of His Revelation.
