The “awakening of compassion and understanding in the hearts of all men and women”
At the very core of the aims of the Faith are the
establishment of justice and unity in the world, the removal of prejudice and
enmity from among all people, the awakening of compassion and understanding in
the hearts of all men and women, and the raising of all souls to a new level of
spirituality and behavior through the vitalizing influence of divine Revelation.
The course set forth by Bahá'u'lláh for the attainment of these aims is the
double task of simultaneously building an ideal society and perfecting the
behavior of individuals. For this dual and reciprocal transformation He has not
only revealed laws, principles and truths attuned to the needs of this age, but
has established the very nucleus and pattern of those institutions which are to
evolve into the structure of the divinely purposed world society.

Virtues to strive for
Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be
worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and
friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an
answerer to the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge.

God’s “gift of understanding”
Know thou that, according to what thy Lord, the Lord of all
men, hath decreed in His Book, the favors vouchsafed by Him unto mankind have
been, and will ever remain, limitless in their range. First and foremost among
these favors, which the Almighty hath conferred upon man, is the gift of
understanding. His purpose in conferring such a gift is none other except to
enable His creature to know and recognize the one true God—exalted be His
glory. This gift giveth man the power to discern the truth in all things,
leadeth him to that which is right, and helpeth him to discover the secrets of
creation. Next in rank, is the power of vision, the chief instrument whereby
his understanding can function. The senses of hearing, of the heart, and the
like, are similarly to be reckoned among the gifts with which the human body is
endowed. Immeasurably exalted is the Almighty Who hath created these powers,
and revealed them in the body of man.

The “good of the world and happiness of the nations”
.... We desire but the good of the world and happiness of
the nations; yet they deem us a stirrer up of strife and sedition worthy of
bondage and banishment.... That all nations should become one in faith and all
men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men
should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and
differences of race be annulled -- what harm is there in this?... Yet so it
shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the
"Most Great Peace" shall come....
- Baha'u'llah (Words of Baha’u’llah, spoken to E.
G. Browne in 1890, from his pen portrait of Bahá'u'lláh, quoted by J. E.
Esslemont in ‘Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era’; The Compilation of Compilations,

The “central theme” of this “Dispensation”
In every Dispensation the light of Divine Guidance has been
focused upon one central theme.... In this wondrous Revelation, this glorious
century, the foundation of the Faith of God, and the distinguishing feature of
His Law, is the consciousness of the oneness of mankind.

The American nation and “the banner of international peace”
... I find the American nation so capable of
achievement and this government the fairest of western governments, its
institutions superior to others, my wish and hope is that the banner of
international reconciliation may first be raised on this continent and the
standard of the Most Great Peace be unfurled here. May the American people and
their government unite in their efforts in order that this light may dawn from
this point and spread to all regions, for this is one of the greatest bestowals
of God. In order that America may avail herself of this opportunity, I beg that
you strive and pray with heart and soul, devoting all your energies to this
end: that the banner of international peace may be upraised here and that this
democracy may be the cause of the cessation of warfare in all other countries.

The “Supreme Concourse”
…another friend referred to the communing of Jesus on the
Mount of Transfiguration with Moses and Elijah; and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá said:
“The faithful are ever sustained by the presence of the
Supreme Concourse. In the Supreme Concourse are Jesus, and Moses, and Elijah,
and Bahá’u’lláh, and other supreme Souls: there, also, are the martyrs.”

The “comprehension of the rational soul”
The foremost degree of comprehension in the world of nature
is that of the rational soul. This power and comprehension is shared in common
by all men, whether they be heedless or aware, wayward or faithful. In the
creation of God, the rational soul of man encompasses and is distinguished
above all other created things: It is by virtue of its nobility and distinction
that it encompasses them all. Through the power of the rational soul, man can
discover the realities of things, comprehend their properties, and penetrate
the mysteries of existence. All the sciences, branches of learning, arts,
inventions, institutions, undertakings, and discoveries have resulted from the
comprehension of the rational soul. These were once impenetrable secrets,
hidden mysteries, and unknown realities, and the rational soul gradually
discovered them and brought them out of the invisible plane into the realm of
the visible. This is the greatest power of comprehension in the world of
nature, and the uttermost limit of its flight is to comprehend the realities,
signs, and properties of contingent things.

The "magnet which will, above all else, attract the hearts and bring new souls into the Cause”
He was very happy to hear from you, and to learn that Green
Acre this year was pervaded with a love and harmony that was instrumental in
confirming many new souls in the Faith. This love amongst the believers is the
magnet which will, above all else, attract the hearts and bring new souls into
the Cause. Because obviously the teachings - however wonderful - cannot change
the world unless the Spirit of Bahá'u'lláh's love is mirrored in the Bahá'í
Communities.

Family unity and serving the Cause
When such difference of opinion and belief occurs between
husband and wife it is very unfortunate for undoubtedly it detracts from that
spiritual bond which is the stronghold of the family bond, especially in times
of difficulty. The way, however, that it could be remedied is not by acting in
such wise as to alienate the other party. One of the objects of the Cause is actually
to bring about a closer bond in the homes. In all such cases, therefore, the
Master used to advise obedience to the wishes of the other party and prayer.
Pray that your husband may gradually see the light and at the same time so act
as to draw him nearer rather than prejudice him. Once that harmony is secured
then you will be able to serve unhampered.

‘God Passes By’: one should “master the subjects and facts it contains”
He feels that you will benefit greatly by the history of the
Cause as outlined in 'God Passes By', and he hopes you will master the subjects
and facts it contains and help to bring them to the attention of the Bahá'ís,
as there is a need in the Cause to see our Holy Faith in its proper
perspective, and he feels you can be of great help in this connection.

The “essential qualifications of a Bahá'í teacher”
Concerning the essential qualifications of a Bahá'í teacher;
these have been repeatedly stated by the Guardian in both his general and
private communications to the friends. Besides many others, there are two most
essential qualifications: first is unqualified devotion and loyalty to
everything the Cause stands for; next is thorough knowledge and comprehension
of the Teachings.

“stage of maturity” for “the collective life of humanity”
All created things have their degree or stage of maturity.
The period of maturity in the life of a tree is the time of its
fruit-bearing.... The animal attains a stage of full growth and completeness,
and in the human kingdom man reaches his maturity when the light of his
intelligence attains its greatest power and development. ...Similarly there are
periods and stages in the collective life of humanity. At one time it was
passing through its stage of childhood, at another its period of youth, but now
it has entered its long-predicted phase of maturity, the evidences of which are
everywhere apparent.... That which was applicable to human needs during the
early history of the race can neither meet nor satisfy the demands of this day,
this period of newness and consummation. Humanity has emerged from its former
state of limitation and preliminary training. Man must now become imbued with
new virtues and powers, new moral standards, new capacities. New bounties,
perfect bestowals, are awaiting and already descending upon him. The gifts and
blessings of the period of youth, although timely and sufficient during the
adolescence of mankind, are now incapable of meeting the requirements of its
maturity.

Receiving “confirmations from the unseen world”
O ye servants of the Blessed Beauty!... It is clear that in
this day, confirmations from the unseen world are encompassing all those who
deliver the divine Message. Should the work of teaching lapse, these
confirmations would be entirely cut off, since it is impossible for the loved
ones of God to receive assistance unless they teach.

“not to be seduced by the ephemeral allurements of the society”
In the midst of a civilization torn by strifes and enfeebled
by materialism, the people of Baha are building a new world. We face at this time opportunities and
responsibilities of vast magnitude and great urgency. Let each believer in his inmost heart resolve
not to be seduced by the ephemeral allurements of the society around him, nor
to be drawn into its feuds and short-lived enthusiasms, but instead to transfer
all he can from the old world to that new one which is the vision of his
longing and will be the fruit of his labours.

The “flowering of the arts”
The beloved Guardian made it clear that the flowering of the
arts which is the result of a divine revelation comes only after a number of
centuries. The Bahá'í Faith offers the world the complete rebuilding of human
society -- a rebuilding of such far-reaching effect that it has been looked forward
to in all the revelations of the past and has been called the establishment of
the Kingdom of God on earth. The new architecture to which this revelation will
give birth will blossom many generations hence. We are now merely at the
beginning of this great process.
The present time is a period of turmoil and change.
Architecture, like all arts and sciences, is undergoing very rapid development;
one has only to consider the changes that have taken place in the course of the
last few decades to have some idea of what is likely to happen during the years
immediately ahead. Some modern buildings have, no doubt, qualities of greatness
and will endure, but very much of what is being constructed now may be outgrown
and may appear ugly but a few generations hence. Modern architecture, in other
words, may be considered a new development in its primitive stage.

“To be approved of God alone should be one's aim.”
The ones in real authority are known by their humility and
self-sacrifice and show no attitude of superiority over the friends. Some time
ago a tablet was written stating that none are appointed to any authority to do
anything but to serve the Cause as true servants of the friends - and for this
no tablet is necessary; such service when true and unsefish, requires no
announcement, nor following, nor written document. Let the servant be known by
his deeds, by his life! To be approved of God alone should be one's aim.

“True consolidation”
True consolidation is to ensure that the love of Bahá'u'lláh
and devotion to His Faith are firmly rooted in the hearts of the believers;
this is the essential foundation for the subsequent addition of increased
knowledge of the teachings and the development of the Bahá'í way of life.

The “Cause is absolutely universal”: - we should “keep from any set forms”
Music, as one of the arts, is a natural cultural
development, and the Guardian does not feel that there should be any
cultivation of "Bahá'í Music" any more than we are trying to develop
a Bahá'í school of painting or writing. The believers are free to paint, write
and compose as their talents guide them. If music is written, incorporating the
sacred writings, the friends are free to make use of it, but it should never be
considered a requirement at Bahá'í meetings to have such music. The further
away the friends keep from any set forms, the better, for they must realize
that the Cause is absolutely universal, and what might seem a beautiful
addition to their mode of celebrating a Feast, etc., would perhaps fall on the
ears of people of another country as unpleasant sounds -- and vice versa. As
long as they have music for its own sake it is all right, but they should not
consider it Bahá'í music.

“under no condition should we tell an untruth”
As to the question whether it is right to tell an untruth in
order to save another, he feels that under no condition should we tell an

manner. Of course it is not necessary to be too outspoken until the question is
directly put to us.

Assurance of help from Baha’u’llah
Your literary ability makes you especially qualified to
teach the Cause. For in the world of today much can be achieved through the
power of the pen. All you need is to try to deepen your knowledge of the
history and the teachings of the Faith, and thus well-equipped you will
assuredly win a glorious success -- Bahá'u'lláh has given us the assurance that
He will be always on our side and will give us all the help we may need. You
should, therefore, arise steadfastly to serve our beloved Cause and dedicate the
rest of your life to the noble ideal which it seeks to realize.

Harmony of science and religion
With regard to the harmony of science and religion, the
Writings of the Central Figures and the commentaries of the Guardian make abundantly
clear that the task of humanity, including the Bahá'í community that serves as
the "leaven" within it, is to create a global civilization which
embodies both the spiritual and material dimensions of existence. The nature
and scope of such a civilization are still beyond anything the present
generation can conceive. The prosecution of this vast enterprise will depend on
a progressive interaction between the truths and principles of religion and the
discoveries and insights of scientific inquiry. This entails living with
ambiguities as a natural and inescapable feature of the process of exploring
reality. It also requires us not to limit science to any particular school of
thought or methodological approach postulated in the course of its development.
The challenge facing Bahá'í thinkers is to provide responsible leadership in
this endeavour, since it is they who have both the priceless insights of the
Revelation and the advantages conferred by scientific investigation.

Our collective future
All nations and kindreds ...will become a single nation.
Religious and sectarian antagonism, the hostility of races and peoples, and
differences among nations, will be eliminated. All men will adhere to one
religion, will have one common faith, will be blended into one race, and become
a single people. All will dwell in one common fatherland, which is the planet
itself.

Use of the Guardian’s writings during devotional portion of 19-Day Feasts
Concerning the matter of the devotions at Nineteen Day
Feasts. We see no contradiction in the three statements of the beloved
Guardian. In essence they all describe exactly the same procedure, namely, that
the Feast is opened with devotional readings, that is to say prayers and
meditations, from the Writings of Bahá'u'lláh, the Báb and the Master.
Following this, passages may be read from other Tablets, from the Holy
Scriptures of previous Dispensations, and from the writings of the Guardian. It
is clear, however, that the beloved Guardian would not wish his own words to be
read as part of an arranged devotional programme in which they would be
interspersed among words of Holy Scripture. In other words, at the Nineteen Day
Feast, where words of the Guardian are to be read they should follow any
selections from the Scriptures and not be mixed with them. This does not mean,
however, that subsequently in the Feast, any of these types of writings may not
be read as suitable during the consultation.

“A twofold process” at work in the world
As we view the world around us, we are compelled to observe
the manifold evidences of that universal fermentation which, in every continent
of the globe and in every department of human life, be it religious, social,
economic or political, is purging and reshaping humanity in anticipation of the
Day when the wholeness of the human race will have been recognized and its
unity established. A twofold process, however, can be distinguished, each
tending, in its own way and with an accelerated momentum, to bring to a climax
the forces that are transforming the face of our planet. The first is
essentially an integrating process, while the second is fundamentally
disruptive. The former, as it steadily evolves, unfolds a System which may well
serve as a pattern for that world polity towards which a strangely-disordered
world is continually advancing; while the latter, as its disintegrating
influence deepens, tends to tear down, with increasing violence, the antiquated
barriers that seek to block humanity's progress towards its destined goal. The
constructive process stands associated with the nascent Faith of Bahá'u'lláh,
and is the harbinger of the New World Order that Faith must erelong establish.
The destructive forces that characterize the other should be identified with a
civilization that has refused to answer to the expectation of a new age, and is
consequently falling into chaos and decline.
- Shoghi Effendi (‘The Unfoldment
of World Civilization’, 11 March 1936, ‘The World Order of Bahá'u'lláh:
Selected Letters’; The Compilation of Compilations, vol. II, The Significance
of the Formative Age of Our Faith)
