Benefits of consultation
Man must consult on all matters, whether major or minor, so
that he may become cognizant of what is good. Consultation giveth him insight
into things and enableth him to delve into questions which are unknown. The
light of truth shineth from the faces of those who engage in consultation. Such
consultation causeth the living waters to flow in the meadows of man's reality,
the rays of ancient glory to shine upon him, and the tree of his being to be
adorned with wondrous fruit. The members who are consulting, however, should
behave in the utmost love, harmony and sincerity towards each other. The principle
of consultation is one of the most fundamental elements of the divine edifice.
Even in their ordinary affairs the individual members of society should
consult.

The “station of sacrifice”
Among the teachings of Baha’u’llah is one on sacrifice. Man
must arrive at the point of sacrifice and the station of sacrifice is that of
complete severance -- that is, his possessions, his comforts, even his life
must be sacrificed for humanity. Until man arrives at such a station, he is
deprived of the effulgences of God and from the bestowals of the Merciful, and
from the breaths of the Holy Spirit, which, in this radiant century, have
become apparent and resplendent.

West, vol. 4, no. 11, September 27, 1913)

The infallibility of the Manifestation of God
Regarding your Bahá’í friend who does not fully understand
the infallibility of the Manifestation of God: You should influence that person
to study the matter more deeply, and to realize that the whole theory of Divine
Revelation rests on the infallibility of the Prophet, be He Christ, Muhammad,
Bahá’u’lláh, or one of the others. If They are not infallible, then They are
not divine, and thus lose that essential link with God which, we believe, is
the bond that educates men and causes all human progress.

Human utterance
Human utterance is an essence which aspireth to exert its
influence and needeth moderation. As to its influence, this is conditional upon
refinement, which in turn is dependent upon hearts which are detached and pure.
As to its moderation, this hath to be combined with tact and wisdom as
prescribed in the Holy Scriptures and Tablets.

The “'Dawn-Breakers' of Nabil”: one of the three books every “Bahá'í should master…and be able to explain their contents to others”
... Shoghi Effendi hopes that you will exert all your effort
to deepen your knowledge of the literature of the movement, until you become
fully acquainted with its spirit and tenets. Unless you do obtain such a firm
hold you will never be able to teach others and render real service to the
promulgation of the Faith. Of special importance is the Book of the Íqán which
explains the attitude of the Cause towards the prophets of God and their
mission in the history of society. Besides this there is Some Answered
Questions of the Master and the 'Dawn-Breakers' of Nabil. Every Bahá'í should
master these books and be able to explain their contents to others. Besides
their importance, they are interesting and most absorbing.

‘Abdu’l-Baha: “the "Mystery of God"
He [‘Abdu’l-Baha] is… the "Mystery of God" -- an
expression by which Bahá'u'lláh Himself has chosen to designate Him, and which,
while it does not by any means justify us to assign to Him the station of
Prophethood, indicates how in the person of 'Abdu'l-Bahá the incompatible
characteristics of a human nature and superhuman knowledge and perfection have
been blended and are completely harmonized.

The purpose underlying all creation is the revelation of
this most sublime, this most holy Day, the Day known as the Day of God, in His
Books and Scriptures -- the Day which all the Prophets, and the Chosen Ones,
and the holy ones, have wished to witness.

The “stage of maturity” for “the evolution of the organization of human society”
That mystic, all-pervasive, yet undefinable change, which we
associate with the stage of maturity inevitable in the life of the individual
and the development of the fruit, must, if we would correctly apprehend the
utterances of Bahá'u'lláh, have its counterpart in the evolution of the
organization of human society. A similar stage must sooner or later be attained
in the collective life of mankind, producing an even more striking phenomenon
in world relations, and endowing the whole human race with such potentialities
of well-being as shall provide, throughout the succeeding ages, the chief incentive
required tor the eventual fulfilment of its high destiny. Such a stage of
maturity in the process of human government must, for all time, if we would
faithfully recognize the tremendous claim advanced by Bahá'u'lláh, remain
identified with the Revelation of which He was the Bearer.

Not to become slaves to the material world
God in His infinite goodness has exalted us to so much
honour, and has made us masters over the material world. Shall we then become
her slaves? Nay, rather let us claim our birthright, and strive to live the
life of the spiritual sons of God. The glorious Sun of Truth has once again
risen in the East. From the far horizon of Persia its radiance is spreading far
and wide, dispersing the dense clouds of superstition. The light of the unity
of mankind is beginning to illumine the world, and soon the banner of Divine
harmony and the solidarity of nations will be flying high in the Heavens. Yea,
the breezes of the Holy Spirit will inspire the whole world!

The “onslaught of all the peoples and kindreds of the earth”
...How great, how very great is the Cause! How very fierce
the onslaught of all the peoples and kindreds of the earth. Ere long shall the
clamor of the multitude throughout Africa, throughout America, the cry of the
European and of the Turk, the groaning of India and China, be heard from far
and near. One and all, they shall arise with all their power to resist His
Cause. Then shall the knights of the Lord, assisted by His grace from on high,
strengthened by faith, aided by the power of understanding, and reinforced by
the legions of the Covenant, arise and make manifest the truth of the verse:
"Behold the confusion that hath befallen the tribes of the defeated!"

Releasing the “powers latent in prayer”
The powers latent in prayer are manifested when it is
motivated by the love of God, beyond any fear or favour, and free from
ostentation and superstition. It is to be expressed with a sincere and pure
heart conducive to contemplation and meditation so that the rational faculty
can be illumined by its effects. Such prayer will transcend the limitation of
words and go well beyond mere sounds. The sweetness of its melodies must
gladden and uplift the heart and reinforce the penetrating power of the Word,
transmuting earthly inclinations into heavenly attributes and inspiring
selfless service to humankind.

‘Abdu’l-Baha
He ['Abdu'l-Baha] is, and should for all time be regarded, first and
foremost, as the Center and Pivot of Bahá'u'lláh's peerless and all-enfolding
Covenant, His most exalted handiwork, the stainless Mirror of His light, the
perfect Exemplar of His teachings, the unerring Interpreter of His Word, the
embodiment of every Bahá'í ideal, the incarnation of every Bahá'í virtue, the
Most Mighty Branch sprung from the Ancient Root, the Limb of the Law of God,
the Being "round Whom all names revolve," the Mainspring of the
Oneness of Humanity, the Ensign of the Most Great Peace, the Moon of the Central
Orb of this most holy Dispensation -- styles and titles that are implicit and
find their truest, their highest and fairest expression in the magic name
'Abdu'l-Bahá.

“Glory… in love for all mankind”
O ye beloved of the Lord! Commit not that which defileth the
limpid stream of love or destroyeth the sweet fragrance of friendship. By the
righteousness of the Lord! Ye were created to show love one to another and not
perversity and rancour. Take pride not in love for yourselves but in love for
your fellow-creatures. Glory not in love for your country, but in love for all
mankind.

The “last and highest stage in the stupendous evolution of man's collective life on this planet”
The Revelation of Bahá'u'lláh, whose supreme mission is none
other but the achievement of this organic and spiritual unity of the whole body
of nations, should, if we be faithful to its implications, be regarded as
signalizing through its advent the coming of age of the entire human race. It
should be viewed not merely as yet another spiritual revival in the
ever-changing fortunes of mankind, not only as a further stage in a chain of
progressive Revelations, nor even as the culmination of one of a series of
recurrent prophetic cycles, but rather as marking the last and highest stage in
the stupendous evolution of man's collective life on this planet. The emergence
of a world community, the consciousness of world citizenship, the founding of a
world civilization and culture – all of which must synchronize with the initial
stages in the unfoldment of the Golden Age of the Bahá'í Era – should, by their
very nature, be regarded, as far as this planetary life is concerned, as the
furthermost limits in the organization of human society, though man, as an
individual, will, nay must indeed as a result of such a consummation, continue
indefinitely to progress and develop.

Role of education in removing “oppression and injustice, of unrighteousness, irregularity and disorder”
…the primary cause of oppression and injustice, of
unrighteousness, irregularity and disorder, is the people's lack of religious
faith and the fact that they are uneducated. When, for example, the people are
genuinely religious and are literate and well-schooled, and a difficulty
presents itself, they can apply to the local authorities; if they do not meet
with justice and secure their rights and if they see that the conduct of the
local government is incompatible with the Divine good pleasure and the king's
justice, they can then take their case to higher courts and describe the
deviation of the local administration from the spiritual law. Those courts can
then send for the local records of the case and in this way justice will be
done. At present, however, because of their inadequate schooling, most of the
population lack even that vocabulary to explain what they want.

The “sun” and “moon” of the “religion of God”
Cling firmly to obligatory prayer and fasting. Verily, the
religion of God is like unto heaven; fasting is its sun, and obligatory prayer
is its moon. In truth, they are the pillars of religion whereby the righteous
are distinguished from those who transgress His commandments. We entreat God,
exalted and glorified be He, that He may graciously enable all to observe that
which He hath revealed in His Ancient Book.

A “solution to the world’s problems given by the Prophet of God for this day”
…he feels that the Bahá’ís have a Plan, a solution to the
world’s problems given by the Prophet of God for this day. Their best way of
serving the world is through the positive and constructive medium of the Cause,
and not though the negative approach of fear of any one group. We have not the
power—in the material sense of that word—to do any good in combatting many of
the evils in the world today, economic or political or social, but we can do a
unique service through our Bahá’í work, for this way we release the power of
God, which is the only Force that can redeem men and carry us forward to an
ultimate victory over the evil of today. He therefore urges you to devote your
mind to peacefully serving the Cause and not worry over whether such a
destructive group does or does not exist.

To “implore pardon and forgiveness” for one’s parents
…a father and mother endure the greatest troubles and
hardships for their children; and often when the children have reached the age
of maturity, the parents pass on to the other world. Rarely does it happen that
a father and mother in this world see the reward of the care and trouble they
have undergone for their children. Therefore, children, in return for this care
and trouble, must show forth charity and beneficence, and must implore pardon
and forgiveness for their parents. So you ought, in return for the love and
kindness shown you by your father, to give to the poor for his sake, with
greatest submission and humility implore pardon and remission of sins, and ask
for the supreme mercy.

Religion
…religion is a mighty stronghold, but that it must engender
love, not malevolence and hate. Should it lead to malice, spite, and hate, it
is of no value at all. For religion is a remedy, and if the remedy bring on
disease, then put it aside. Again, as to religious, racial, national and
political bias: all these prejudices strike at the very root of human life; one
and all they beget bloodshed, and the ruination of the world. So long as these
prejudices survive, there will be continuous and fearsome wars.

“establishing the Kingdom of God in this turbulent world”
…establishing the Kingdom of God in this turbulent world is
no easy task. It requires unshakeable faith, complete reliance on God, high
endeavour, an indomitable spirit, constant striving, and infinite patience and
long-suffering. You are aware of God’s method and look upon your efforts as
seeds sown by the divine Husbandman in His field. Cultivating and gathering the
crop require hard work, time, patience, and sacrifice, but through the bounties
of God, an abundant harvest is assured. You remain confident that just as the
seed, which through the outpourings of the rain and the exertions of the
gardener gradually grows into a mighty and fruitful tree, so too your selfless
efforts and the labours of other Bahá’ís around the globe …will, at the
appointed time, through the blessings of the Abhá Beauty, yield wondrous
fruits; hearts will be enlightened, this darksome earth illumined, and the
oneness of humanity ultimately realized.

“Let the servant be known by his deeds, by his life!”
The ones in real authority are known by their humility and self-sacrifice
and show no attitude of superiority over the friends. Some time ago a tablet
was written stating that none are appointed to any authority to do anything but
to serve the Cause as true servants of the friends - and for this no tablet is
necessary; such service when true and unsefish, requires no announcement, nor
following, nor written document. Let the servant be known by his deeds, by his
life! To be approved of God alone should be one's aim.

They whom God hath endued with insight will readily

People entering the Faith in large numbers
It is not sufficient to number the souls that embrace the
Cause to know the progress that it is making. The more important consequences
of your activities are the spirit that is diffused into the life of the
community, and the extent to which the teachings we proclaim become part of the
consciousness and belief of the people that hear them. For it is only when the
spirit has thoroughly permeated the world that the people will begin to enter
the Faith in large numbers.

Children reciting prayers in the morning
Every day at first light, ye gather the Bahá'í children
together and teach them the communes and prayers. This is a most praiseworthy
act, and bringeth joy to the children's hearts: that they should, at every
morn, turn their faces toward the Kingdom and make mention of the Lord and
praise His Name, and in the sweetest of voices, chant and recite.
These children are even as young plants, and teaching them
the prayers is as letting the rain pour down upon them, that they may wax
tender and fresh, and the soft breezes of the love of God may blow over them,
making them to tremble with joy.
