To “live the life”
The great thing is to "live the life" --to have
our lives so saturated with the Divine teachings and the Bahá'í Spirit that people
cannot fail to see a joy, a power, a love, a purity, a radiance, an efficiency
in our character and work that will distinguish us from worldly-minded people
and make people wonder what is the secret of this new life in us. We must
become entirely selfless and devoted to God so that every day and every moment
we seek to do only what God would have us do and in the way He would have us do
it. If we do this sincerely then we shall have perfect unity and harmony with
each other. Where there is want of harmony, there is lack of the true Bahá'í
Spirit. Unless we can show this transformation in our lives, this new power,
this mutual love and harmony, then the Bahá'í teachings are but a name to us.

The Kitab-i-Aqdas
…the promulgation of the Kitáb-i-Aqdas. Alluded to in the
Kitáb-i-Íqán; the principal repository of that Law which the Prophet Isaiah had
anticipated, and which the writer of the Apocalypse had described as the 'new
heaven' and the 'new earth,' as 'the Tabernacle of God,' as the 'Holy City,' as
the 'Bride,' the 'New Jerusalem coming down from God,' this 'Most Holy Book,'
whose provisions must remain inviolate for no less than a thousand years, and
whose system will embrace the entire planet, may well be regarded as the
brightest emanation of the mind of Bahá'u'lláh, as the Mother Book of His
Dispensation, and the Charter of His New World Order.

The “two ways of healing sickness”
There are two ways of healing sickness, material means and
spiritual means. The first is by the treatment of physicians; the second
consisteth in prayers offered by the spiritual ones to God and in turning to
Him. Both means should be used and practised.
Illnesses which occur by reason of physical causes should be
treated by doctors with medical remedies; those which are due to spiritual
causes disappear through spiritual means. Thus an illness caused by affliction,
fear, nervous impressions, will be healed more effectively by spiritual rather
than by physical treatment. Hence, both kinds of treatment should be followed;
they are not contradictory. Therefore thou shouldst also accept physical
remedies inasmuch as these too have come from the mercy and favour of God, Who
hath revealed and made manifest medical science so that His servants may profit
from this kind of treatment also. Thou shouldst give equal attention to
spiritual treatments, for they produce marvellous effects.

The “divine religions of the holy Manifestations of God are in reality one”
The ocean is one body of water but different parts of it
have particular designation, Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Antarctic, etc.
If we consider the names, there is differentiation, but the water, the ocean
itself is one reality.
Likewise the divine religions of the holy Manifestations of
God are in reality one though in name and nomenclature they differ. Man must be
a lover of the light no matter from what day-spring it may appear. He must be a
lover of the rose no matter in what soil it may be growing. He must be a seeker
of the truth no matter from what source it come.

The Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha
We stand indeed too close to so monumental a document [Will and Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Baha] to
claim for ourselves a complete understanding of all its implications, or to
presume to have grasped the manifold mysteries it undoubtedly contains. Only
future generations can comprehend the value and the significance attached to
this Divine Masterpiece, which the hand of the Master-builder of the world has
designed for the unification and the triumph of the world-wide Faith of
Bahá’u’lláh. Only those who come after us will be in a position to realize the
value of the surprisingly strong emphasis that has been placed on the
institution of the House of Justice and of the Guardianship. They only will
appreciate the significance of the vigorous language employed by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá
with reference to the band of Covenant-breakers that has opposed Him in His
days. To them alone will be revealed the suitability of the institutions
initiated by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to the character of the future society which is to
emerge out of the chaos and confusion of the present age.

“Houses of Justice”
That the Spiritual Assemblies of today will be replaced in
time by the Houses of Justice, and are to all intents and purposes identical
and not separate bodies, is abundantly confirmed by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Himself. He
has in fact in a Tablet addressed to the members of the first Chicago Spiritual
Assembly, the first elected Bahá’í body instituted in the United States,
referred to them as the members of the “House of Justice” for that city, and
has thus with His own pen established beyond any doubt the identity of the
present Bahá’í Spiritual Assemblies with the Houses of Justice referred to by
Bahá’u’lláh. For reasons which are not difficult to discover, it has been found
advisable to bestow upon the elected representatives of Bahá’í communities
throughout the world the temporary appellation of Spiritual Assemblies, a term
which, as the position and aims of the Bahá’í Faith are better understood and
more fully recognized, will gradually be superseded by the permanent and more
appropriate designation of House of Justice.

To “perceive with the eye of God”
Verily I say! No one hath apprehended the root of this
Cause. It is incumbent upon everyone, in this day, to perceive with the eye of
God, and to hearken with His ear. Whoso beholdeth Me with an eye besides Mine
own will never be able to know Me. None among the Manifestations of old, except
to a prescribed degree, hath ever completely apprehended the nature of this
Revelation.

The “station ordained for the true believer”
By the sorrows which afflict the beauty of the All-Glorious!
Such is the station ordained for the true believer that if to an extent smaller
than a needle’s eye the glory of that station were to be unveiled to mankind,
every beholder would be consumed away in his longing to attain it. For this
reason it hath been decreed that in this earthly life the full measure of the
glory of his own station should remain concealed from the eyes of such a
believer.

Justice’)

“people of Bahá”
O people of Bahá! Ye are the breezes of spring that are
wafted over the world. Through you We have adorned the world of being with the
ornament of the knowledge of the Most Merciful. Through you the countenance of
the world hath been wreathed in smiles, and the brightness of His light shone
forth. Cling ye to the Cord of steadfastness, in such wise that all vain
imaginings may utterly vanish. Speed ye forth from the horizon of power, in the
name of your Lord, the Unconstrained, and announce unto His servants, with
wisdom and eloquence, the tidings of this Cause, whose splendor hath been shed
upon the world of being. Beware lest anything withhold you from observing the
things prescribed unto you by the Pen of Glory, as it moved over His Tablet
with sovereign majesty and might. Great is the blessedness of him that hath
hearkened to its shrill voice, as it was raised, through the power of truth,
before all who are in heaven and all who are on earth....

Divorce
As regards the problem of your marriage, you are free to
refer this to the National Spiritual Assembly. As both you and your wife know,
however, Bahá'u'lláh was not in favour of divorce, and the friends should make
every effort to avoid bringing it about. If it is absolutely impossible, they
then are free to divorce, but they should bear in mind the will of God in such
matters.

Those to whom one should not show kindness
The foundation of the Kingdom of God is laid upon justice,
fairness, mercy, sympathy and kindness to every soul. Then strive ye with heart
and soul to practice love and kindness to the world of humanity at large,
except to those souls who are selfish and insincere. It is not advisable to
show kindness to a person who is a tyrant, a traitor or a thief because
kindness encourages him to become worse and does not awaken him. The more
kindness you show to a liar the more he is apt to lie, for he thinks that you
know not, while you do know, but extreme kindness keeps you from revealing your
knowledge.

“firm on principles and laws, but very normal and natural in our ways”
The Bahá’ís are free to greet each other with Alláh-u-Abhá
when they meet, if they want to, but they should avoid anything which to
outsiders, in a western country, might seem like some strange Oriental
password. We must be very firm on principles and laws, but very normal and
natural in our ways, so as to attract strangers.

The “real use” of the “administrative machinery of the Cause”
Now that they (the American believers) have erected the
administrative machinery of the Cause they must put it to its real use—serving
only as an instrument to facilitate the flow of the spirit of the Faith out
into the world. Just as the muscles enable the body to carry out the will of
the individual, all Assemblies and committees must enable the believers to
carry forth the Message of God to the waiting public, the love of Bahá’u’lláh,
and the healing laws and principles of the Faith to all men.

Mother is “the first teacher of the child”
That the first teacher of the child is the mother should not
be startling, for the primary orientation of the infant is to its mother. This
provision of nature in no way minimizes the role of the father in the Bahá'í
family. Again, equality of status does not mean identity of function.

When a Spiritual Assembly becomes “appointed of God”
...I earnestly appeal to every one of you ... to make ...
yet another effort, this time more spontaneous and selfless than before, and
endeavour to approach your task .. . with that purity of spirit that can alone
obtain our Beloved's most cherished desire. Let us recall His ['Abdu'l-Baha's] explicit and
often repeated assurances that every Assembly elected in that rarefied
atmosphere of selflessness and detachment is in truth appointed of God...

The “one favoured at the Threshold of the Lord” in this day
In this day, the one favoured at the Threshold of the Lord
is he who handeth round the cup of faithfulness; who bestoweth, even upon his
enemies, the jewel of bounty, and lendeth, even to his fallen oppressor, a
helping hand; it is he who will, even to the fiercest of his foes, be a loving
friend.

“methods of teaching”
The sanctified souls should ponder and meditate in their
hearts regarding the methods of teaching. From the texts of the wondrous,
heavenly Scriptures they should memorize phrases and passages bearing on
various instances, so that in the course of their speech they may recite divine
verses whenever the occasion demandeth it, inasmuch as these holy verses are
the most potent elixir, the greatest and mightiest talisman. So potent is their
influence that the hearer will have no cause for vacillation. I swear by My
life! This Revelation is endowed with such a power that it will act as the
lodestone for all nations and kindreds of the earth. Should one pause to
meditate attentively he would recognize that no place is there, nor can there
be, for anyone to flee to.

Future Manifestations of God
The bud, the flower, the fruit are only symbols to convey to
us the sense of the progress being made by man in receiving ever fuller
Revelations from God. In spite of the vast spiritual significance of what Bahá’u’lláh
has brought to the world we humans have infinite progress to make in the
future. Future Prophets will bring us new laws suitable to our state of
development and continue to educate us on this planet, but they will be under
the shadow of Bahá’u’lláh for five thousand centuries.

Anti-Christ
We do not believe in Anti-Christ in the sense the Christians
do. Anyone who violently and determinedly sought to oppose the Manifestation
could be called an “anti-Christ,” such as the Vazír in the Báb’s day, Hájí

God
We find God only through the Intermediary of His Prophet. We
see the Perfection of God in His Prophets. Time and space are physical things;
God, the Creator, is not a “place” as we conceive of place in physical terms.
God is the Infinite Essence, the Creator. We cannot picture Him or His state,
but if we did, we would be His equals, not His creatures. God is never flesh,
but mirrored in the attributes of His Prophets we see His Divine
characteristics and perfections.

Acquiring “the heavenly characteristics of the spirit”
The root cause of wrongdoing is ignorance, and we must
therefore hold fast to the tools of perception and knowledge. Good character
must be taught. Light must be spread afar, so that, in the school of humanity,
all may acquire the heavenly characteristics of the spirit, and see for
themselves beyond any doubt that there is no fiercer hell, no more fiery abyss,
than to possess a character that is evil and unsound; no more darksome pit nor
loathsome torment than to show forth qualities which deserve to be condemned.

The “chief cause of the protection of mankind, and the supreme instrument for its preservation”
The first word which the Abhá Pen hath revealed and
inscribed on the first leaf of Paradise is this: “Verily I say: The fear of God
hath ever been a sure defence and a safe stronghold for all the peoples of the
world. It is the chief cause of the protection of mankind, and the supreme
instrument for its preservation. Indeed, there existeth in man a faculty which
deterreth him from, and guardeth him against, whatever is unworthy and
unseemly, and which is known as his sense of shame. This, however, is confined
to but a few; all have not possessed, and do not possess, it. It is incumbent
upon the kings and the spiritual leaders of the world to lay fast hold on
religion, inasmuch as through it the fear of God is instilled in all else but
Him.”

Nabil and his chronicle: ‘The Dawn-Breakers’
Regarding Nabil: He was born on the 18th day of the month of
Safar of the year 1247 A. H. in the village of Zarand in Persia. He was
thirteen years old when the Báb declared Himself. Though still young he himself
was preparing to leave for Shaykh Tabarsi and join the companions of Mulla
Husayn when the news of the treachery and massacre of the besieged companions
reached him. He met Bahá'u'lláh in Kirmanshah and Tihran before the latter's
banishment to Iraq. He was a close companion of the Báb's amanuensis Mirza
Ahmad. He subsequently met Bahá'u'lláh in Baghdad, Adrianople and 'Akká and was
commissioned by Bahá'u'lláh to journey several times to Persia in order to
promote the Cause and encourage the scattered and persecuted believers. He was
present in 'Akká when Bahá'u'lláh passed away in 1892 and soon after was so
overcome with grief that he drowned himself in the sea. His body was found
along the shore and was buried in the cemetery of 'Akká. 'Abdu'l-Bahá is
reported to have been struck with deep sorrow at the manner of his death. He
states in his narration that he met the maternal uncle of the Báb, Haji Mirza
Siyyid Ali who had visited his nephew in the Castle of Chihriq and had recently
returned to Tihran. He started writing his narrative in 1305 A.H. four years
before the passing of Bahá'u'lláh. It took him about a year and half to write
it. His chief informants were Mirza Ahmad the amanuensis of the Báb and Mirza
Musa the brother of Bahá'u'lláh. Parts of his narrative were read in the
presence of Bahá'u'lláh and approved by Him. 'Abdu'l-Bahá also went over
sections of his narrative....

Those who passed away before hearing about the Baha’i Faith
As for thy question concerning those righteous souls who
passed away ere they heard the Call of this Revelation, know thou that those
who ascended unto God ere they heard this Call, but who followed the precepts
of Christ and walked in the Straight Path — these verily attained, after
ascending to the Divine Kingdom, unto the Refulgent Light.

Baha’i marriage: “may enjoy everlasting unity throughout all the worlds of God”
Bahá'í marriage is the commitment of the two parties one to
the other, and their mutual attachment of mind and heart. Each must, however,
exercise the utmost care to become thoroughly acquainted with the character of
the other, that the binding covenant between them may be a tie that will endure
forever. Their purpose must be this: to become loving companions and comrades
and at one with each other for time and eternity…
The true marriage of Bahá'ís is this, united both physically
and spiritually, that they may ever improve the spiritual life of each other,
and may enjoy everlasting unity throughout all the worlds of God. This is
Bahá'í marriage.

Obligatory Prayer: “a ladder for the souls, a lamp unto the hearts of the righteous, and the water of life from the garden of paradise”
Thou hast written concerning obligatory prayer. Such prayer
is binding and mandatory for everyone. Most certainly guide all to its
observance, because it is like unto a ladder for the souls, a lamp unto the
hearts of the righteous, and the water of life from the garden of paradise. It
is a clear duty prescribed by the All-Merciful, in the observance of which it
is in no wise permissible to be dilatory or neglectful.

The “success” of Nineteen Day Feasts
To a very large extent, the success of the Feast depends on
the quality of the preparation and participation of the individual. The beloved
Master offers the following advice: "Give ye great weight to the Nineteen
Day gatherings, so that on these occasions the beloved of the Lord and the
handmaids of the Merciful may turn their faces toward the Kingdom, chant the
communes, beseech God's help, become joyfully enamored each of the other, and
grow in purity and holiness, and in the fear of God, and in resistance to
passion and self. Thus will they separate themselves from this elemental world,
and immerse themselves in the ardors of the spirit."

To “serve as a divine physician to mankind”
If in this day a soul shall act according to the precepts
and the counsels of God, he will serve as a divine physician to mankind, and
like the trump of Israfil, [1] he will call the dead of this contingent world
to life; for the confirmations of the Abha Realm are never interrupted, and
such a virtuous soul hath, to befriend him, the unfailing help of the Company
on high. Thus shall a sorry gnat become an eagle in the fullness of his
strength, and a feeble sparrow change to a royal falcon in the heights of
ancient glory.
